My original plan was to stay 60 days in New Zealand.
I ended up staying 85 days (out of the 90 allowed with the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority - NZeTA.
That pretty much shows how much I fell in love with this country where the movies “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” were filmed.
Mountains, surfing beaches, rainforests, deserts, volcanoes: New Zealand has everything for backpackers who love the outdoors and hiking.
It’s also the ideal place to push back your limits!
Get an adrenaline rush while trying one of the many extreme activities or doing a multi-day hike through the highest peaks in the country.
The incredible kindness and generosity of the Kiwis (the New Zealanders), which makes the stay even more fantastic, is also worth mentioning.
New Zealand is really a beautiful and amazing country that will leave you breathless. And if you get the chance to hire a campervan and travel across the country in it, DO IT!
If you’re thinking about heading there during winter (from July to September), you should keep in mind that some destinations and activities listed in my itineraries for backpackers in New Zealand may be closed or unavailable.
During these months, it’s the winter sports (skiing, snowboarding, skating) that are in the spotlight, especially in the South Island.
So stop looking for things to do in New Zealand and start planning your trip right now with these itineraries.
Whether you opt to travel to the South Island or the North Island, be prepared to get mind-blown by the incredible landscapes you’ll witness.
In two weeks, you'll have time to see all the diversity the country has to offer, whether you travel to both islands or choose to explore only one.
There's so much to do in NZ, it’s hard to do everything, even in 30 days. But with these itineraries, you'll check a lot of places off your list.
